Aleppo - SMART

On Monday, people from the city of Afrin near Aleppo, Northern Syria, said that the security campaign launched by the National Army of the Syrian Interim Government is useless and will not prevent corruption.

Omar, a civilian, reported that the security campaign is “positive and good”, because the al-Sharqiyah Martyrs faction committed several violations. Omar criticized the participation of corrupt fighters during the campaign against corruption.

Omar added, “The only bad thing in the campaign is that there were many fighters in the National Army campaign who are more corrupt that the al-Sharqiyah Martyrs faction.”

Muhanad, another civilian, said that getting rid of a corrupt faction does not automatically get rid of corruption, adding, “There are many bad people in there (…) the campaign is useless but it is a warning for the other factions.”

An anonymous man from Afrin said that the tactic of scaring other factions with a security campaign is useless, and that all factions are corrupt and the people of Afrin demand an end to all armed manifestation in the city.

A man who was forcibly displaced to Afrin, Abo Abdo, said that the security campaign caused financial losses to many shopkeepers in the Villa Street in the city, as most of the shops were looted and destroyed.

A source said that the National Army looted several shops in the Villa and al-Mahmudiah streets in Afrin. The National Army promised to investigate the case.

The National Army factions gained control of the al-Sharqiyah Martyrs' headquarters in the Villa Street in Afrin amidst ongoing clashes to gain control of the remaining headquarters. The National Army faction suspended the clashes for a short period in order to evacuate families from the area.

On Sunday, the FSA launched a security campaign against the al-Sharqiyah Martyrs faction and imposed a curfew in Afrin. Clashes between both parties killed three National Army fighters and injured others, in addition to injuring at least six civilians, one of whom is in a critical condition.
