Al-Hasakah - SMART

The Women's Justice Council of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration has documented the marriage of 189 minor girls since the beginning of 2016 until mid-November this year.

On Wednesday, the head of the council, Ainor Basha, reported that child marriage has spread due to the lack of security and poor economic conditions in Syria. As a result, parents want their daughters to leave home and marry early.

Basha stated that the role of women's rights institutions and organizations is to launch campaigns and awareness sessions to educate society about the psychological and physical damage caused by child marriage.

Basha said that if they find out about a family planning to marry off their underage daughter, they make the father promise not to let his daughter marry before the age of 18.

Basha added that if a child marriage contract has already been signed, those who signed it will receive three to seven year prison sentences and the girl's father is also guilty of the crime, according to the Autonomous Administration law, Article 157.

The Young Women Union of the Kurdish Democratic Council in Syria in the Deir al-Zor governorate, Eastern Syria, demanded additional legislation to reduce child marriage and domestic violence.

The SARA Organization to combat violence against women documented 213 cases of violence against women in 2017, and more than 4,000 in December 2016 in Autonomous Administration-controlled areas.
