Idlib - SMART

A group of women participated in a workshop in the village of al-Rami, 20 kilometers south of Idlib, Northern Syria, to discuss the role of women in decision-making, politics, and elections.

Bayan Rihan, a relations official for the Day After organization in the supervision of the workshop, told SMART that the workshop included a film screening showing different experiences of Arab and European women who changed the future of their countries through their leading roles in society.

Rihan said that the 13 women who participated in the workshop agreed to the importance of women's presence in local councils and other political bodies to represent the Syrian women, especially in the circumstances that Syria suffers.

Asaad Doqmaq, a relations official for the Next Day organization, talked about the important role of women in decision-making, conflict resolution, negotiations, and peace processes, stressing the necessity of women participating in local council elections and reaching high posts in society.

A workshop participant, Fatimah Mohammad, said that women's absence from leading positions is due to the customs and trades inherited in society and leading to men's monopoly of these positions. Mohammad added that the solution lies in activating the role of women in social institutions.

Earlier, women from the town of Aynjarah, Western Aleppo, participated for the first time in the elections for a new local council, after the previous members were all men, despite that civil society organizations launched several women support projects.

The first time that women participated in the elections for local councils was on Aug. 20, 2017, in Eastern Ghouta, Rif Dimashq, later, women become able to participate in local councils in Idlib, Aleppo, and other governorates.

Syrian women have engaged in all businesses and proven themselves in different professions and trades, such as volunteering for the Civil Defense, working for humanitarian organizations and local administrations, participating in political conferences and winning honorary prizes.
