Al-Raqqa - SMART

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) arrested men in the city of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria after they staged a demonstration against them.

The SDF are mainly comprised of the Kurdish People's Protection Units in addition to Arab, Turkmen, and Assyrian/Syriac military factions. The SDF is supported by the United States-backed International Coalition against the Islamic State and fought them in al-Raqqa, Deir al-Zor, Aleppo, and al-Hasakah in Northeastern Syria.

Local sources reported that on Thursday evening, the SDF arrested seven men in the al-Mansour neighborhood in the center of al-Raqqa after a demonstration demanded the SDF to leave the city.

The sources added that more than 30 men gathered in al-Mansour Street, burned tires, chanted against the SDF, demanded them to leave the city and hand over the city’s administration to its residents.

The sources said that the men demonstrated after members of SDF checkpoint assaulted a man from the al-Afadela tribe, injuring him. He was transferred then to the hospital.

In June, the SDF arrested three men after they stormed an Internet cafe in the city of al-Raqqa after demonstrations demanding them to leave the city.

Many demonstrations took place in al-Raqqa after calls by activists. The demonstrators demanded the SDF to leave the city, wrote slogans against them, and rejected forced recruitment, amidst the SDF security alert.
