Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Saturday, the Islamic State (IS) seized parts of the village of al-Bahra of the city of Hajin, 112 kilometers southeast of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria, after clashes with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

The SDF are mainly comprised of the Kurdish People's Protection Units in addition to Arab, Turkmen, and Assyrian/Syriac military factions. The SDF is supported by the United States-backed International Coalition against the Islamic State and fought them in al-Raqqa, Deir al-Zor, Aleppo, and al-Hasakah in Northeastern Syria.

The IS attacked the SDF locations in the village with 15 armed vehicles and seized four military locations and installed checkpoints in them, forcing the SDF to withdraw.

People from the village fled to the SDF-controlled city of al-Gharanij, 90 kilometers east of Deir al-Zor. The SDF called for military reinforcement from the Elite Army to launch a counterattack.

Activists confirmed that the warplanes of the United States-led International Coalition against the IS targeted IS military vehicles on the al-Bahra perimeter and other vehicles attempting to enter the village.

The International Coalition is a military coalition of 73 countries led by the United States, which allegedly restricts its military actions to fighting the Islamic State, but has also killed hundreds of civilians during its bombings on IS-controlled areas.

On Feb. 20, 2018, the SDF gained control of al-Bahra after 15-day battles with the IS.

Last week, the IS attacked SDF locations in al-Bahra, killing and injuring SDF members. The IS withdrew after the US-led International Coalition’s warplanes targeted the clashes locations.

On Nov. 17, 2018, the SDF said that battles and the International Coalition’s bombings killed 22 IS members in Deir al-Zor.

On Nov. 11, 2018, the SDF, supported by the US-led International Coalition, announced relaunching military operations in Eastern Deir al-Zor. Earlier, the SDF has suspended the operations due to the Turkish attacks of the SDF-controlled areas in al-Raqqa and Aleppo, according to the SDF.
