Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Monday, an International Coalition airstrike on the village of al-Baghouz, 122 kilometers southeast of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria, killed an Islamic State (IS) commander and six members.

Local sources told SMART that International Coalition warplanes targeted an IS military vehicle in the village, killing the Iraqi IS commander Muhannad Saeed Mohammad al-Rawi and six of his guards.

The sources said that al-Rawi, who was the commander of what is known as the IS Jaysh al-Asrah, was known in the area as Abu Abdul Rahman al-Rawi.

The Jaysh al-Asrah has 700 Iraqi members and is considered one of the most distinguished IS components in charge of covert operations and front line clashes, according to the sources.

In October 2018, International Coalition airstrikes on al-Baghouz killed another IS official, Saffan al-Rawi.

The airstrikes followed a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announcement that they would resume the International Coalition-backed military operations against the IS in Eastern Deir al-Zor, after they stopped temporarily due to Turkish attacks on SDF-controlled areas in al-Raqqa and Aleppo.
