Al-Raqqa - SMART

On Monday, the International Coalition began to set up its first border observation base near the town of Tal Abyad, 80 kilometers north of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria, as part of a plan to establish five bases on the Syrian-Turkish border.

Sources in the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said that the International Coalition began the establishment of the first observation base about 10 kilometers east of Tal Abyad.

The sources noted that the International Coalition seeks to establish the observation bases near the Syrian-Turkish border, after recent Turkish shelling on SDF bases, in order to reduce potential attacks.

On October 31, 2018, the Turkish Army shelled bases near the border in the town of Tal Abyad, killing an SDF fighter and wounding another. Earlier, the Turkish Army shelled the vicinity of Ayn al-Arab (Kobani), killing a member of the Kurdish Autonomous Administration's defense units.

Earlier, the International Coalition and SDF launched joint patrols on the Turkish border. SMART observed four armored military vehicles with US soldiers, and the US Army announced that it would establish observation towers along the border. Turkey disagrees with the establishment of such bases.
