Aleppo - SMART

The media activist Durgham Hammadi and the driver of his car disappeared in Western Aleppo on Tuesday while they were on their way to camps in Northern Idlib to get entry permits for press coverage.

On Wednesday, Hammadi's wife said that they lost contact with him on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. when he was on his way to the Bab al-Hawa crossing to film a documentary about widows in the Urum al-Joz camp for internally displaced people.

The wife demanded security and military authorities to investigate Hammadi's disappearance, and said that she holds the authorities responsible for the persecution of journalists in the region.

According to his family, 45-year-old Hammadi is from Aleppo and lives in the city of al-Atarib after the Syrian government forcibly displaced him from his city. Hammadi works for a local news website.

Unknown persons and military factions regularly kill, kidnap and torture journalists in areas outside Syrian government control in Northern Syria. Sultan Murad Brigade members arrested and tortured the activist Bilal Saryool.
