Turkey - SMART

On Wednesday, the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and Syrian National Coalition for Revolutionary Forces delegation to Astana reported that the discussions concerning political prisoners in Syrian government prisons were successful and may lead to the prisoners' release.

Ayman al-Asimi, the head of the media committee in the delegation to Astana, stated that in the next meeting, which will be held on Thursday, they will determine the system of releasing the prisoners from the Syrian government prisons with the state guarantors Turkey, Russia, and Iran. Al-Asimi added that they finalized the negotiations and presented documents from the prisoners.

Al-Asimi noted that they have not determined the system of releasing the prisoners because the United Nations, Red Crescent, and Red Cross are in charge of implementing the system.

Al-Asimi added that they will bring up the case of the prisoners in the Hama Central Prison during the meeting on Thursday, noting that they plan to show videos, numbers, and documents from inside the prison. They will also demand a UN committee to visit the prisoners and document the violations and agressions by the guards against the prisoners.

Al-Asimi noted the arrest campaigns that the Syrian government forces launched in areas they seized after reconciliation agreements between Russia and FSA factions in Southern Syria. Al-Asimi added that they will demand Russia to assume its responsibility as a guarantor of the agreements, and put an end to the Syrian government's violations and encroachment in the areas it seized.

The first round of the tenth Astana Talks were held in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday morning.  Russian, Turkish, and Iranian delegations attended the talks as representatives of the state guarantors. The Syrian government and FSA delegations also attended the talks, which will end on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that they will focus on forming the Syrian Constitutional Committee in the Astana talks. The FSA and Syrian National Coalition delegation said that they will discuss two major issues, which are the Syrian government forces' violations of the Idlib demilitarization agreement and the issue of the prisoners in the Syrian government prisons.
