Idlib - SMART

On Friday, dozens of civilians demonstrated against the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in the city of Kafr Nubl, 36 kilometers south of Idlib, Northern Syria.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

According to eyewitnesses, the demonstrators raised the Syrian revolution flag and banners reading, “To the remnants of al-Qaeda: you must leave, we demand Jamal Maarouf and Methqal al-Abdullah to re-liberate Idlib because it has become empty of men.” The demonstrators also chanted slogans for media activists Raed Fares and Hamoud Junaid, who were assassinated a week ago in the city.

Jamal Maarouf was the commander-in-chief of the Free Syrian Army's Syrian Revolutionary Front, of which Methqal al-Abdullah was a military commander. The two commanders escaped to Turkey after being defeated in clashes against the al-Nusra Front. They are the first military commanders who clashed with the al-Nusra Front.

A day before, the Syrian Human Rights Network published a report, in which it suspected that the HTS was involved in assassinating the activist's Fares and Junaid.

On Wednesday, the students of the Free Idlib University organized a sit-in, condemning the killing of Fares and Junaid. They called on the FSA and the Islamic battalions to detect the responsible for the assassination and hold them accountable. On Tuesday, hundreds of people also demonstrated in the city of Kafr Nubl demanding the HTS to leave and condemning the absence of security.

On Friday, unknown shooters assassinated Fares and Junaid in the city of Kafr Nubl. The assassination was locally and internationally received with condemnation, as the United States and United Kingdom's Foreign Affairs Offices, and the French President Emmanuel Macron offered their condolences to the activists' relatives.
