Idlib - SMART

More than 60 percent of the residents of the town of Jarjanaz, 37 kilometers south of Idlib, Northern Syria, fled their town fearing another Syrian government forces' shelling on the area.

Husain al-Doghayim, head of the town's local council, reported that most of the displaced families fled to the farmlands near the city of Maarrat al-Numan and the villages of Tallmanas, Maar Shamarin, and Abu Makkah.

Al-Doghayim said that the Maram humanitarian organization running a camp in the village of Marrat al-Ikhwan near the city of Idlib announced its readiness to receive displaced people from Jarjanaz. Around 15 families from Jarjanaz headed for the Marrat al-Ikhwan camp so far.

A Civil Defense member reported that more than 150 vehicles carrying displaced families and their belongings left Jarjanaz on Friday, not mentioning their destination.

Local activists said that the residents of the nearby village of al-Tah are fleeing their homes as the Syrian government forces shelled the area, to return home when the shelling stops.

On Thursday, more than 1,800 families fled al-Tah and headed for the nearby villages of Maar Shamarin, al-Deir al-Gharbi, Baboulin, and Kafroumah.

The Syrian government forces repeatedly targeted the towns and villages of Southern and Easters Idlib with artillery and missile shelling, killing and injuring civilians, despite that the area is included in a demilitarized zone agreement concluded by the Russian president and his Turkish counterpart in July 2018.
