Hama - SMART

Detainees in the Hama Central Prison of the Syrian government, Central Syria, suspended a hunger strike that lasted for 18 days to protest the death sentences against some of them.

On Saturday, a detainee in prison said that they suspended the strike after the reconciliation committee and the prison administration promised them to consider the detainee's issue and refer it to Russian officials.

About 40 detainees received news of their relocation to the Saydnaya Central Prison in Rif Dimashq, where 11 of them will be executed. The Syrian government arrested the detainees for participating in a demonstration at the beginning of the Syrian Revolution in 2011. After this news, the detainees announced an open hunger strike in prison.

On Nov. 19, the detainees called on the Syrian government to allow them to meet with the Russian envoy at the Hmeimim military air base. Earlier, a Russian delegation canceled a visit to the Hama Prison to meet and negotiate with the prisoners.

The prisoners called for sit-ins to demand their release, while their families canceled a sit-in in the al-Assi Square fearing arrests by the Syrian government.
