Idlib - SMART

The United States resumes their support of local and international humanitarian organizations in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria.

On Sunday, Yasser Shehadah, the executive manager of the SKT Relief and Development Organization, reported that after appeals by organization officials, the US Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) informed international and local organizations, including the SKT, that they will continue their support.

Shehadah added that on Sep. 15, 2018, OFDA suspended its support to several hospitals, camps for displaced people, water and hygiene projects, and environmental sanitation after the Islamist faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham gained control of the Idlib governorate.

The OFDA is an organizational unit within the United States Agency for International Development and was established by executive order of President John F. Kennedy in 1961. It is responsible for administering civilian foreign aid and development assistance.

Humanitarian organizations operate in collaboration with local councils in the areas outside Syrian government control in Northern Syria, carrying out service, development, and humanitarian projects, amidst a lack of financial means that regularly forces organizations to stop projects.
