Idlib - SMART

On Monday, the Shafaq Makani Organization and the Aspirin Team held a seminar to raise awareness about breast cancer, how to detect it early, and how it is treated at the University of Idlib City, Northern Syria.

Fatimah Jammo, an administrative officer for Shafaq Makani, told SMART that the seminar focused on raising women's awareness of the significance of early detection of breast cancer. Early detection helps cure about 96 percent of breast cancer cases. The seminar also addressed ways to avoid the disease.

Jammo added that the seminar attendees learned about the causes of breast cancer and the methods for detecting it without the help of specialists or doctors.

Jammo added that the areas outside Syrian government forces control lack breast cancer specialists, medical centers to supervise treatment, and census correspondents to document cases.

Rim Sattouf, a medical student and member of the Aspirin Team, said that Syria needs breast cancer awareness campaigns, as most Syrian women do not possess information about the causes and ways of detecting it.

On Nov. 5, 2018, the Free Health Directorate of the city of Idlib, in collaboration with the Syrian-American Medical Society (SAMS), opened a center to treat breast tumors and lymphoma in the city's Central Hospital.
