Idlib - SMART

The local council of the village of al-Laj in the Ariha area, 14 kilometers west of Idlib, Northern Syria, demanded the village's neutralization from the infighting between the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

The Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement is part of the Syrian National Liberation Front, which is the main rival of the HTS in Northwestern Syria.

In a statement published on Monday night and obtained by SMART, the council called for a ban on carrying arms in the village to avoid harming civilians.

On Monday, the HTS seized the villages of al-Laj and Aneb after clashes with the Ahrar al-Sham Movement. The clashes, which occurred between the two parties for unknown reasons, killed and injured members on both sides.
