Idlib - SMART

Clashes between the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement killed a pregnant woman in the Jadraya village of Ariha, 14 kilometers west of Idlib, Northern Syria.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

The Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement was founded in 2011 and is part of the Syrian National Liberation Front (NLF), which is the main rival of the HTS in Northwestern Syria.

On Tuesday, local activists reported that the two parties opened intense fire during clashes in the village last night, killing a pregnant woman by mistake. The activists stated that three mortar shells fell on the village without knowing who fired them.

The activists said that two cars carrying HTS flags are heading in the village now, noting that there were no HTS members in the village previously.

On Nov. 10, 2018, the village leaders formed a local council that announced joining the NLF of the Free Syrian Army and working with the councils of the Syrian Interim Government. On Nov. 14, 2018, another council was formed to work with the Salvation Government in HTS-controlled areas, according to a statement seen by SMART.

On Monday, the HTS gained control of the villages of al-Laj and Aneb after clashes with the Ahrar al-Sham, killing and injuring fighters on both sides.
