Al-Raqqa - SMART

On Tuesday, cold weather and lack of medical care killed a newborn child in a makeshift camp in the Hos area, 70 kilometers east of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria.

A relative of the dead child said that cold weather during the last two days killed the four-month-old child in a camp near the village of Kahs Ojeil of the Hos area.

The rainstorm that hit the area destroyed about 30 tents in makeshift camps in Northern and Western al-Raqqa governorate due to the lack of support to these camps, as aid and support are provided to official camps.

Dozens of families frequently arrive from Eastern Deir al-Zor to al-Raqqa and reside in makeshift camps. Other forcibly displaced people (FDP) live in camps managed by the Autonomous Administration.

FDP in the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)-controlled areas suffer from harsh humanitarian conditions amidst a lack of services and aid. The SDF also imposes strict security procedures. The FDP cannot return to their destroyed houses due to battles with the Islamic State in Eastern Syria.
