Hama - SMART

The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, seized control of the village of Zayzoun in Northwestern Hama, Central Syria, after clashing with the Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement.

The Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement was founded in 2011 and is part of the Syrian National Liberation Front, which is the main rival of the HTS in Northwestern Syria.

On Tuesday, local activists told SMART that the HTS attacked the village the night before, after the Ahrar al-Sham created a base in the village.

After the attack, the Ahrar al-Sham retaliated by attacking an HTS checkpoint near the village of Qastoun. A member of the Ahrar al-Sham was killed in the attack. Tension prevails in the area, and both parties brought reinforcements, according to activists.

Local activists said that the HTS clashed with the Ahrar al-Sham in villages in Northwestern Hama and Western Idlib after the Ahrar al-Sham established several military bases in the area.

On Monday, the HTS seized the villages of al-Laj and Aneb, Western Idlib, after clashes that killed and injured members on both sides.
