Idlib - SMART

On Tuesday, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement reached a temporary ceasefire agreement in Northern Syria.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

The Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement was founded in 2011 and is part of the Syrian National Liberation Front (NLF), which is the main rival of the HTS in Northwestern Syria.

A military commander in the Ahrar al-Sham, who introduced himself as Abu Osama, said that the ceasefire agreement will last until commanders on both sides hold a meeting to settle the disagreement.

An HTS commander, who introduced himself as Abu Khaled, said that they reached the agreement after the HTS seized all the villages that the Ahrar al-Sham had infiltrated earlier in the Idlib and Aleppo governorates, Northern Syria. Abu Khaled noted that the ceasefire agreement will last until Wednesday morning. Abu Khaled added that military commanders on both sides will hold a meeting. Abu Khaled said, "According to a previous agreement between us, the Ahrar al-Sham is not allowed to open headquarters or establish checkpoints in Idlib or Hama."

Abu Osama added that the HTS attempts to expand its areas on the perimeter of the Aleppo-Latakia highway. Abu Osama noted that the HTS stormed the village of Jadraya in Southern Idlib using heavy weapons to remove an Ahrar al-Sham headquarter.

Abu Osama noted that on Monday evening, the sides reached a ceasefire agreement, but the HTS violated it and attacked the villages of al-Luj and al-Sahn in Southern Idlib and Qastoon in Northwestern Hama.

Abu Khaled claims the Ahrar al-Sham is responsible for the infighting, adding, "The Ahrar al-Sham is trying to expand its areas at our expense (...) Its checkpoint guards frequently assault our fighters."

The HTS and Ahrar al-Sham reached the ceasefire agreement after raising the alert in Idlib and Hama. The HTS seized the villages of al-Luj and Anib in Southern Idlib, and Zayzoon and Qastoon in Northwestern Hama, following clashes with the Ahrar al-Sham, killing, injuring, and capturing fighters on both sides.
