Idlib - SMART

On Wednesday, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement reached a permanent ceasefire agreement in areas in Idlib and Hama, Northern and Central Syria.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

The Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement was founded in 2011 and is part of the Syrian National Liberation Front (NLF), which is the main rival of the HTS in Northwestern Syria.

Khaled Wadah, a member of the HTS Relations Office, stated that both sides reached a ceasefire agreement and agreed to decrease the security level.

Wadah added that both sides agreed on releasing the detainees and preserving the status quo according to the agreement that was signed by the Ahrar al-Sham's Captain Abu al-Munzer and Abu al-Hasan from the HTS.

The HTS and Ahrar al-Sham reached the permanent agreement following two days of clashes in Western Idlib and the Hama countryside that killed a civilian. The clashes ended on Tuesday evening when the sides reached a temporary ceasefire. Each side accused the other of initiating the clashes and held it responsible for what happened.
