Al-Suwayda - SMART

On Wednesday, armed youths blocked a Russian military patrol in the city of Shahba, 17 kilometers north of al-Suwayda, Southern Syria, forcing the patrol to leave the city, as the youths shot into the air.

A local source reported that members of a Russian military police patrol was roaming the city when armed youths stopped them and asked them to leave.

In November 2018, dignitaries in al-Suwayda refused a demand by Yaser al-Shoufi, the regional secretary of the Socialist Arab al-Baath Party, to establish Syrian government forces checkpoints in al-Suwayda to chase thieves and kidnappers.

Forty thousand youths in al-Suwayda abstained from joining the Syrian government forces. In 2015, the Sheikhs al-Karama faction refused the Syrian government forces' compulsory recruitment of youths from al-Suwayda. The Syrian National Coalition of Opposition and Revolutionary Forces agreed with the refusal.
