Turkey - SMART

On Sunday, Turkish security forces arrested 13 people suspected of belonging to the Syrian opposition faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) after an arrest campaign in the city of Adana, Southern Turkey.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

Security sources told the Turkish Anadolu News Agency that security forces backed by special police units launched an arrest campaign in the city of Adana, arresting 13 people suspected of fighting with the HTS, recruiting members, and providing financial and logistics support.

The sources said that Turkish anti-terrorist forces launched a security campaign to arrest 16 people suspected of belonging to the HTS in the Turkish Istanbul, Adana, and Ankara provinces.

On November 8, 2018, the Turkish anti-terrorism department arrested two people suspected of belonging to the HTS in the city of Istanbul.

The Turkish government considers the HTS as a terrorist organization despite the HTS' announcement of defecting from the al-Qaeda organization.

The HTS was formed in February 2017 from a union between several factions, most distinguished of them were the Fateh al-Sham Front, previously known as the al-Nusra Front, and the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement, which announced its defection from the HTS on July 20, 2017.
