Al-Hasakah - SMART

Hundreds of Syrian and Iraqi families, including families of Islamic State (IS) members, arrive in the al-Hawl camp, 70 kilometers south of al-Hasakah, Northeastern Syria, from the nearby Deir al-Zor governorate.

Nabil Hasan, an administrative at the camp, reported that over the past four days, 298 Syrian families consisting of 983 individuals and 305 Iraqi families consisting of 1,370 individuals arrived in the camp through the al-Sobh crossing in the city of Shaddadah. Hasan added that eight IS members' families consisting of 29 individuals also arrived in the camp.

On Jan. 2, 2019, Hasan said that families continue to arrive in the camp from areas of clashes between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the IS, adding that the camp provided the arriving families with blankets and food baskets.

Hasan mentioned that 3,944 families consisting of 16,248 individuals reside in the camp, including 1,832 Syrian families and 2,112 Iraqi families. Families continue to enter and exit the camp, according to Hasan.

In mid-April 2016, the executive council of the Autonomous Administration opened the al-Hawl camp to receive internally displaced Syrians fleeing from IS-controlled areas in Syria and refugees from Iraq. The camp is near the town of al-Hawl in eastern al-Hasakah.
