Hama - SMART

On Monday, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) promised not to prosecute Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement fighters in HTS- controlled areas in northern Hama, Central Syria. The HTS urged the fighters not to leave the area.

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

The Ahrar al-Sham Islamist Movement is a part of the National Liberation Front (NLF), which is an opposition group formed by the two Sunni Islamist groups Ahrar al-Sham and the Nour al-Din al-Zenki Movement. The NLF is the main rival of the HTS in Northwestern Syria.

HTS officials headed by Abu Ass'ad, the official of the General Follow Up Department in what they call the southern sector of their controlled areas, met dignitaries from the Bani Khalid tribe in the Shahshabou mountainous area in Hama.

Marwan al-Sheyhan, a dignitary from the Bani Khalid tribe, said that the HTS promised them that it will not prosecute the Ahrar al-Sham fighters and that it pardoned the fighters and allowed them to choose to remain in their homes or return to their posts on the frontline against the Syrian government forces with their personal weapons.

Sheyhan added that the HTS agreed on the dignitaries' request not to establish HTS checkpoints in the area from the Shahshabou mountainous area to the village of Qal'at al-Madiq. Sheyhan noted that the HTS urged the Ahrar al-Sham fighters not to leave for Northern Syria.

The HTS posted a video of the meeting showing Abu Suleiman, the General Secretary of the Bani Khalid Council, talking about the agreement with the HTS. Abu Suleiman emphasized that the HTS released all Ahrar al-Sham captives.

The HTS issued a statement warning its fighters against prosecuting the Ahrar al-Sham fighters who remained in HTS areas without judicial proceedings, noting that it would punish HTS fighters if they assault Ahrar al-Sham fighters. The HTS called on its fighters who received personal lawsuits to present them to a court.

Earlier, a military source from the Ahrar al-Sham reported that 1,500 of their fighters will leave for the Afrin area, which is controlled by the Free Syrian Army factions, after the HTS gained control of northern Hama militarily and administratively.

Earlier, the HTS called on fighters of the factions stationed at the frontline with the Syrian government forces to stay at their posts, promising to support them. The HTS issued another statement that prevents selling, purchasing, and hiding weapons or ammunition in the Shahshabou mountainous area and al-Ghab Plain.

On Thursday, the HTS and NLF reached an agreement to end the clashes in the Idlib governorate and transfer the area to the HTS' Salvation Government.
