Idlib - SMART

On Wednesday, the Syrian government warplanes committed a massacre in the city of Idlib, Northern Syria, killing and injuring 89 people.

The head of the documentation and information department of a hospital in Idlib, Abdul Razzaq Ghafir, reported to SMART that the Syrian government warplanes shelled the Industrial area in eastern Idlib. Ghafir added that the shelling killed 19 civilians, including a child and a Civil Defense volunteer, and injured 70 others, including children and women, at an early count.

A medical source in Idlib Hospital added that they received more than 40 wounded people as a result of airstrikes on the Industrial area.

Medical sources and eyewitnesses stated that most of the wounded people were burned up in different parts of the body due to fires in the Industrial area. The sources noted that the fires broke out because there are flammable materials and fuels that are used in the industrial workshops.

The sources said that Civil Defense teams rushed to the targeted place to search for survivors and wounded people and to extinguish the fires that broke out. Meanwhile, mosques rang sirens because the warplanes were still flying over the city.

The sources added that the warplanes also targeted the Mihrab Roundabout in the city, causing only material damage.

Last night, the Russian warplanes returned to shell the cities, towns and villages in Idlib governorate, for the first time after the truce agreed between Russia and Turkey in the governorate.

On Jan. 10, 2020, the Turkish Defense Ministry announced a ceasefire in the Idlib governorate starting from Jan. 12, 2020, after the Syrian government forces violated the ceasefire announced by Russia on Jan. 9, 2020.

Since Nov. 25, 2019, the Syrian government forces and loyalist militias, with the support of Russia, have been launching a ground military attack on southern and eastern countryside of Idlib. They intensified the attack on Dec. 20, 2019, as the Syrian government gained control of dozens of villages and towns in the region, after intense bombing, killing and injuring hundreds of civilians, and displacing hundreds of thousands of others.

The attack is a continuation of the military operation launched by the Syrian government forces and Russia on April 25, 2019. In August 2019, the Syrian government gained control of northern Hama countryside and the Khan Sheikhun region. Military analysts and journalists say that the battles’ goal is that the Syrian government and Russia gain control of the Aleppo - Damascus international highway (which connects Turkey with Jordan and the Arab Gulf states) to be opened later under Russian-Turkish sponsorship according to the agreement between President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan in September 2018, in the Russian city of Sochi.
