Deir al-Zor, Syria, Jan. 24, 2019. A statue of the late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad stands in a square near destroyed houses in the al-Rushdiah neighborhood, the al-Qusour area of the city of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria. In November 2018, the Syrian government forces reinstalled the statue in the presence of a ministerial delegation and renamed the square the President Square. In July 2011, the Syrian government forces removed the statue lest being destroyed by the demonstrators, who destroyed the statue of Hafez al-Assad's oldest son Bassel in April 2011.
