Al-Qamishli Syria, Jan. 27, 2019. The billboard of the Swedish mobile broadband provider R-Cell hangs in a street in the city of al-Qamishli near al-Hasakah, Northeastern Syria. The provider started operating in the al-Hasakah governorate after expanding its services from the Iraqi Kurdistan region. The network covers the cities and towns of al-Malikiyah, Jawadiyah, Qahtaniyah, al-Qamishli and Amuda with 4G mobile data, which is faster than the Turkish and Syrian mobile broadband networks, which only offer 3G data. Several Turkish companies provide Internet services to cities and towns in Syria that are outside Syrian government control. Last year, a Turkish company, in collaboration with local councils, set up cellular towers in Northern and Northeastern Syria. Photo: Issam Amin.
