Al-Qatirji Militia smuggles oil from US' allies to Syrian government despite sanctions
Syria - SMART
The Kurdish Autonomous Administration operating in Northeastern Syria continues to smuggle oil to Syrian government-controlled areas, although the United States, which is the most prominent ally to the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), imposed sanctions on groups and individuals for facilitating oil transferring to the Syrian government.
In the light of US sanctions on the Syrian government, which suffers from severe fuel crisis, an armed militia has recently emerged to facilitate smuggling oil between both sides’ areas. The militia is headed by Hussam al-Qatirji, who is a member of the Syrian government’s People Assembly, and a businessman close to the government.
