SYP exchange rate continues declining against USD; North Free Doctors Syndicate warns of humanitarian disaster in Idlib and Aleppo due to lack of medicine

On Wednesday, the Syrian pound exchange rate against the United States dollar reached 2,000 SYP in Syrian government-controlled areas.

Local sources reported to SMART that the exchange rate in the Syrian government-controlled city of Damascus reached 2,000 SYP for sales and 1,990 for purchase, after it was 1,890 for sales and 1,860 for purchase on June 1, 2020.

The Syrian government closed licensed money exchange shops in the Daraa governorate, Southern Syria, saying that these shops did not adhere to issued laws and instructions.  

Activists in Daraa reported to SMART that the Syrian government closed the Ersal, Chamna, and Feraoun money exchange offices.

The sources added that other licensed financial companies delayed the delivery of the remittances from abroad, pretexting by the lack of financial liquidity. The sources also said that by these measures, the Syrian government is seeking to control the markets and control the exchange rate against the USD, which declined today to a new record in Daraa, reaching 2050 SYP.

Two landmines exploded while a joint Russian-Turkish military patrol was passing by the Aleppo-Latakia international highway (M4) near the city of Ariha in the Idlib governorate, Northern Syria, without casualties.

On Thursday, military forces of the International Coalition and the Syrian Democratic Forces carried out a raid campaign against the Islamic State, east of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria.

Clashes between Syrian government forces and former Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters killed a Syrian government forces member and injured two others in the city of al-Sanamayn, 53 kilometers north of the city of Daraa, Southern Syria. 

A media activist from the city of Aleppo, Northern Syria, was tortured to death in the Far' Falastin Prison pf the Syrian government forces in Damascus.

Dozens of people suffered from food poisoning in the city of Idlib, Northern Syria, due to eating rotten food from a restaurant in the city.

On Wednesday, the Doctors’ Syndicate of the Syrian Interim Government in Idlib issued a decision to fix the price of physical exam in USD or its equivalent in SYP.

International and political news:

In a statement, the North Free Doctors Syndicate warned of a humanitarian disaster that threatens the lives of people outside the Syrian government forces’ control in Idlib and Aleppo due to the lack of medicine and its high prices.  

Doctor Muhammad Walid Tamer, head of the syndicate, reported to SMART that Russian and Syrian government forces shelling during the last military campaign, forces medicine factories in the western Aleppo countryside to shot down, resulting in a loss of 85 percent of production capacity in the area. 

A human rights team in the Daraa governorate documented 70 assassinations during May, most of them targeted former FSA fighters.

The Daraa Martyrs Documentation Office stated that it documented 70 assassinations in Daraa that resulted in killing 53 people and injuring 14 others, while three people survived assassination operations.

Over the past 24 hours, 4,915 people were affected by COVID-19 in Syria’s neighboring countries, according to health ministries in these countries.
