Idlib, Syria, Dec. 6, 2018. Eyewitnesses to the assassination of distinguished activists Raed Fares and Hammoud Junaid in the city of Kafr Nubl, Idlib, Northern Syria, confirm that the murder was carried out professionally and with prior planning. This confirmation indicates that the activists have been observed for a while. A resident of the city, Talhat al-Sheikh, who witnessed the incident, said that gunmen in a silver van approached the car of Fares who was with Junaid and his friend Ali Dandoush. The gunmen fired more than 30 shots and then fled. The shots killed Fares and Junaid immediately. Al-Sheikh added that the unknown persons had pursued the activists for 15 days before the assassination. On Nov. 23, 2018, hundreds held the funeral of distinguished media activists, Raed Fares and Hammoud Junaid in the city of Kafr Nubl, after unknown persons killed them. Earlier, the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham arrested Fares and Junaid for their media and political activity in the Syrian revolution. Unknown masked persons also tried to assassinate Fares in early 2014.
