Idlib - SMART

On Sunday, unknown gunmen kidnapped an activist in the town of Tal Minis, which belongs to the city of Maarrat al-Nu'man in Southern Idlib, Northern Syria.

Local activists reported that unknown gunmen kidnapped the activist Riyad al-Izzo in front of the grand mosque in Tal Minis, which is controlled by the opposition faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS).

The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.

On Monday, unknown gunmen killed a civilian and released an HTS commander for a ransom after the gunmen kidnapped the civilian and the HTS commander near the city of Saraqib, Eastern Idlib.

Recently, kidnappings have become commonplace in Idlib. Unknown gunmen have  killed commanders and fighters of the Free Syrian Army and Islamist battalions as well as civilians.
