Deir al-Zor - SMART

Forty-four members of the Islamic State (IS) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were killed in the last 24 hours of ongoing clashes between the two sides in Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria.

On Monday, local sources told SMART that the IS and SDF clashed on the perimeter of the village of al-Bagouz al-Fawqani and the al-Sousse area, resulting in 29 killed IS members and more than 15 killed SDF fighters.

The sources added that there are IS members located in orchards around al-Bagouz al-Fawqani. The IS members carry out hit and run operations against the SDF, which is trying to advance amid dense foliage and narrow roads.

SDF media reported that its forces disarmed three car bombs and destroyed an IS communications center near al-Bagouz al-Fawqani, with the participation of International Coalition aircraft, which carried out 12 air raids on IS sites.

On Sunday, the IS reseized al-Bagouz al-Fawqani after it launched a counter-attack on the village from the center of the town of al-Marashdeh, the area of Sarab Muzan, and the town of al-Sousse, killing and injuring SDF fighters.

The clashes coincide with the start of the Syrian Democratic Forces' military offensive on the town of al-Sousse near the city of Deir al-Zour, to expel the IS.

The SDF continue to clash with the IS in Eastern Deir al-Zor after the SDF announced the last phase of the al-Jazeera Storm Operation against the IS. The SDF slowly advances into IS-controlled areas, killing and injuring fighters on both sides, forcing civilians to flee the area.
