Al-Hasakah - SMART

On Tuesday, the Dooz civil society organization held a seminar to raise awareness about women's sports in the city of Qamishli, 70 kilometers north of al-Hasakah, Northeastern Syria.

Toleen Musa, the head of the Women's Sports Office in the Sports Union of the Autonomous Administration, said that the seminar aims to change people's preconceptions of women in Northeastern Syria and remove obstacles from their path. Musa added that before 2011, women did not see progress nor ethics in sports.

Musa noted that many women in the al-Hasakah governorate have joined the Sports Union and regularly participate in sports activities.

Musa added that 400 women registered for taekwondo training, 75 for volleyball, and 48 for basketball.

Ahlam Hasan, a member of the Dooz organization, said that the aim of the seminar is to encourage women to participate in sports, because they have not participated earlier due to society customs and traditions. Hasan noted that the organization is at the initial stage of encouraging women's participation in sports, which she also believes is a key factor in fighting extremism.

The Youth and Sports Association of the Autonomous Administration regularly organizes sports activities and events in al-Hasakah, such as purebred Arabian horse shows, al-Hasakah's first women's football tournament, a men's volleyball league, and a taekwondo tournament.
