Activists circulate founding committee decision on adopting new flag in Northern Syria
Idlib - SMART
On social media on Monday, Syrian activists circulated a statement issued by the founding committee in the areas controlled by the Islamist opposition faction Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in Idlib, Northern Syria. The statement called for a new flag in Northern Syria that resembles the Syrian revolution flag.
The decision said that the new flag is made up of four colors; green on top, white in the center with the phrase “There is no god but God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God” in red and black on the bottom.
SMART contacted the founding committee to confirm the decision, but it refused to confirm or deny it.
Most of the activists on social media expressed their refusal to change the Syrian revolution flag, recalling how they carried it in demonstrations demanding the overthrow of the Syrian regime.
Earlier, Islamist battalions took down the Syrian revolution flag after it was lifted in cities outside Syrian government control, causing clashes between activists and battalion members.
After the Syrian revolution broke out, the opposition to the Syrian government adopted the flag stipulated in the 1950 Constitution as a flag of the Syrian Republic. It consists of three rectangles of green on the top, black on the bottom and white in the middle with three red stars.
The founding committee was formed during the Syrian General Conference in October last year, and subsequently established the Salvation Government, which runs the civil affairs in HTS-controlled areas in Northern Syria.
