Al-Raqqa - SMART

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) found 12 thousand liters of chlorine gas in SDF-controlled areas in the al-Raqqa governorate, Northeastern Syria.

The spokesman for the Internal Security Forces of the al-Raqqa Civil Council, he calls himself Muhannad, told SMART that the security forces found 15 canisters filled with chlorine gas in the city of al-Raqqa, in addition to three canisters in the al-Widyan area north of the al-Tabqah city.

Muhannad said that experts from the International Coalition destroyed the entire amount of gas in a safe place specially prepared for this purpose.

According to Muhannad, the SDF depended on earlier reports, which indicated that the Islamic State (IS) was in possession of the material.

In August 2016, the IS targeted the city of Mari, Aleppo, with chlorine and mustard gas shells, killing several civilians by suffocation, according to a medical source's statement to SMART.

Reuters quoted an official in the United Nations saying that the number of chemical attacks documented by the Commission of Inquiry on Syria since 2013 has reached 39, including 33 attributed to the government. The perpetrators of the remaining six have not been sufficiently identified.
