Russian delegation cancels visit to Hama Central Prison to meet prisoners
Hama - SMART
A Russian delegation canceled a visit to the Hama Central Prison, Central Syria, to meet and negotiate with its prisoners.
On Sunday, a private source reported that the delegation was meant to visit the prison last Tuesday to meet and negotiate with the prisoners, who are on a hunger strike, but the visit was canceled for unknown reasons.
The source added that the Syrian government stopped sending parties to meet and negotiate with the prisoners, amidst difficulties to communicate with them due to the poor phone signal around the prison.
On Sunday, November 18, 2018, two prisoners lost consciousness during the sixth day of the hunger strike. The Syrian government deployed forces to the prison's perimeter and in the city of Hama.
The prisoners called for sit-ins to demand their release, while their families canceled a sit-in in the al-Assi Square fearing arrests by the Syrian government. The prisoners' families appealed to humanitarian organizations to put pressure on the Syrian government to prevent sending them to the Sadnaya Military Prison in Rif Dimashq, Southern Syria.
A few days ago, about 40 detainees received news of their relocation to the Sadnaya Central Prison in Rif Dimashq, where 11 of them will be executed. The Syrian government arrested the detainees for participating in a demonstration at the beginning of the Syrian Revolution in 2011. After these news, the detainees announced an open sit-in in the prison.
