Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Monday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) revealed that pro-Syrian government Iranian militias prepare to attack an SDF-controlled oilfield near Deir al-Zor, Eastern Deir al-Zor.

The SDF are mainly comprised of the Kurdish People's Protection Units in addition to Arab, Turkmen, and Assyrian/Syriac military factions. The SDF is supported by the United States-backed International Coalition against the Islamic State (IS) and fought them in al-Raqqa, Deir al-Zor, Aleppo, and al-Hasakah in Northeastern Syria.

An anonymous military source from the SDF said that the Iranian militias are relocating members to the villages of Khisham and al-Salhiah north of Deir al-Zor in order to attack the village of al-Azbah by the Coneco oilfield. The International Coalition is likely to prevent the Iranian militias' advance, according to the same source.

The source added that the militias want to attack the oilfield due to its economic importance and to put pressure on the SDF, which is fighting the IS.

Earlier, a Syrian government sniper killed an SDF member near the city of Mayadin, 45 kilometers southeast of Deir al-Zor.

The Syrian government forces and their allied militias have launched several military operations in the SDF-controlled areas. Recently, the Syrian government forces, the Shabiha militia, the Iranian-supported Baqir Brigade, and other militias from the Syrian Hezbollah from the village of Hatlah seized four SDF-controlled villages. The SDF regained control of the villages hours after the attack.
