Turkey - SMART

On Wednesday, Russia demanded the Syrian government forces seize areas, from which the United States troops will withdraw.

In a press conference, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, said it is clear that the Syrian government forces will seize the areas, from which the US troops will withdraw, under international law, according to Sputnik news agency.

Zakharova said that the US withdrawal would contribute to a comprehensive settlement of the situation in Syria. Zakharova added that Russia did not fully understand the reasons behind this step and that there is no clear timetable for withdrawal.

US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of his troops from Syria after they eliminated the Islamic State (IS), as he said. Washington's allies in the International Coalition against the IS objected to the US withdrawal, while Russia, Iran, and Turkey welcomed that.

Turkey is preparing to launch a large-scale military operation against the US-backed Kurdish People’s Protection Units in Eastern Aleppo and east of the Euphrates River, Northern Syria, to replace the US troops that will withdraw.

Russia and the Kurdish Autonomous Administration forces are negotiating on a Moscow offer to deploy border forces of the Syrian government on the border with Turkey, to prevent Turkey from launching operations.
