Elective committee elects head of Free Daraa governorate council in Northern Syria
Turkey - SMART
The elective committee, supervised by the ministry of local administration, relief, and refugees of the Syrian Interim Government, elected the head of the Free Daraa governorate council in Northern Syria.
Huda al-Deri, a member of the elective committee, reported to SMART that the candidate Faisal al-Shaqran won by 14 votes over 12 votes for the candidate Ghusain al-Mneizel. Al-Deri added that 26 out of 27 members participated in the elections.
Earlier, the ministry of the local administration appointed the members of the elective committee depending on the nominations of the local councils to form a new governorate council for Daraa. The council will work on serving forcibly displaced people (FDP) from Daraa to Northern Syria and representing them at the ministry.
Al-Deri also said that they appointed the candidate Adel Awad Ayn the council’s deputy head after the withdrawal of the candidate Myassar al-Hariri from his post.
The election occurred in the presence of Ahmad Qassoum, the assistant minister of the local administration and under the supervision of the lawyer Hassan al-Ibrahim, the head of the elective committee. The executive office of the governorate council will be elected later in the same day, according to al-Deri.
Thousands of FDP from the Daraa governorate in Southern Syria arrived in the Idlib governorate in Northern Syria after Russia agreed with the Free Syrian Army (FSA) factions on July 6, 2018. The agreement included a ceasefire, handing over the FSA heavy weapons, and allowing people who refused the agreement to exit the area.
