European civil society organizations suspend work in some HTS-controlled areas
Turkey - SMART
German and French-funded civil society organizations suspend their work in some of the areas controlled by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in Northern and Central Syria.
The HTS is an Islamist opposition faction previously known as the al-Nusra Front, consisting of fighting groups including the Haqq Brigade, Jabhat Ansar al-Din, and Jaysh al-Sunnah.
On Tuesday, an informed source reported that organizations associated with the German and French governments temporarily suspended their work. The source noted that the organizations are donors to projects related to governance, stability support and rehabilitation of local councils and women's support projects.
The source said that the most distinguished organizations are Nova, the German Agency for International Cooperation and its partner Local Development Organization (LDO) in Syria responsible for supporting local councils and employees' salaries.
The source stated that projects related to women's work associated with LDO in the areas of Qalat al-Madiq in Hama, Saraqib and Maarrat al-Nu'man in Idlib and Atarib and Kafrnaha in western Aleppo were suspended until further notice.
The HTS tries to make all the institutions in its controlled areas part of the Salvation Government after it gained control of western Aleppo, the entire governorate of Idlib and northern Hama, following days of clashes with the Free Syrian Army. The clashes killed and injured fighters on both sides and a number of civilians.
