Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Tuesday, local residents of the village of al-Shuhail, 38 kilometers southeast of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria, confiscated oil tankers in protest against the Syrian Democratic Forces' (SDF) neglect of their village.

Local sources told SMART that the residents took the tankers and made checkpoints in the village, noting that the tanks were heading from the al-Omari oil field to areas controlled by the SDF outside Deir al-Zor. The sources did not know the number of confiscated tankers nor where they were headed specifically.

The sources noted that the village suffers from the deterioration of services, unemployment and poverty, noting that the residents accuse the SDF of stealing oil and neglecting their situation.

In December 2018, young men from the al-Shaitat tribe damaged oil pipes near the al-Saijan complex east of al-Huraiji village after they were denied access to refine the oil.

Earlier, local residents of al-Shaitat demanded the International Coalition to support basic services, education and health in the region.
