Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Thursday, a suspected International Coalition against the Islamic State (IS) airstrike killed five members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and injured seven others in the town of al-Baguz, 119 kilometers southeast of Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria.

Local sources reported that suspected International Coalition warplanes shelled the town of al-Baguz using white phosphorus shells. The IS gained control of the town after clashes with the SDF.

The sources suspected that the International Coalition aircraft shelled the SDF sites by mistake. A source from the SDF, who was present there, said that the International Coalition shelled them because it thought them to be an IS group.

On Dec. 18, 2018, the SDF gained control of the entire town of al-Susah, eastern Deir al-Zor, after the IS withdrew from it.
