Deir al-Zor - SMART

On Monday, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) advanced in Islamic State (IS) territory in the village of al-Marashida in the al-Susah area, southeastern Deir al-Zor, Eastern Syria.

The SDF is mainly comprised of the Kurdish People's Protection Units in addition to Arab, Turkmen, and Assyrian/Syriac military factions. The SDF is supported by the United States-backed International Coalition against the Islamic State and fought them in al-Raqqa, Deir al-Zor, Aleppo, and al-Hasakah in Northeastern Syria.

An unknown SDF military commander said that they gained control of most of the al-Marashida village following clashes with IS members who withdrew to nearby pomegranate groves.

The SDF is trying to expel the IS from its last controlled area in Deir al-Zor. On December 23, 2018, the SDF gained control of the village of al-Mouzan after controlling the town of al-Susah.
