Idlib - SMART

On Tuesday, a woman suicide bomber blew herself up in the leadership headquarter of the Salvation Government, which operates in the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-controlled areas, in the city of Idlib, Northern Syria.

The Syrian Salvation Government is affiliated with the HTS, and formed without an election at the end of November 2017. It has been seated within the Idlib governorate since the HTS took control of the border and the internal crossings in opposition against the Syrian Interim Government.

Eyewitnesses reported to SMART that the woman fought with the headquarter's guards before she blew herself with an explosive belt, injuring two of the guards, who were transported to the Governorate Hospital.

HTS media channels assumed that the woman was affiliated with the Islamic State, without providing further information about the incident.

Witnesses added that the Salvation Government's police and security service surrounded the headquarter and court and prevented people from approaching the area.

On May 18, 2018, an anonymous explosion targeted a Salvation Government headquarter in the city of Idlib, killing and injuring more than 17 people.

The areas controlled by the FSA and Islamist battalions in the governorates of Idlib and Aleppo have been home to assassinations and explosions that targeted commanders and fighters, killing and injuring several civilians.
