Al-Raqqa - SMART
An explosive device killed and injured members of the National Defense militia, which support the Syrian government forces, east of the city of al-Raqqa, Northeastern Syria.
The National Defense Militia is an armed militia that was formed by the Syrian regime in 2012 to support the regime's military operations in Syria. It is accused of committing war crimes against civilians.
A private security source reported to SMART that the device exploded in a National Defense militia vehicle on the al-Sabkhawi road, east of the Syrian government forces-controlled city of al-Raqqa. The explosion killed a member and injured two other, who were transported to the Maadan hospital.
Earlier on Friday, a landmine explosion injured two Syrian government forces members in the al-Sabkha area, 30 kilometers east of al-Raqqa.
The Syrian government forces control parts of the al-Raqqa governorate, while the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) controls the largest areas of the governorate after the latter, supported by the International Coalition, expelled the Islamic State in 2017. Recently, the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army gained control of the city of Tal Abyad and dozens of villages after clashes with the SDF.
