Idlib - SMART
On Saturday, the National Liberation Front (NLF) of the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) announced blocking a Syrian government forces advance attempt in the village of Maarrat Alia, 11 kilometers east of the city of Idlib, Northern Syria, killing and injuring several Syrian government forces members.
Saif Raad, media official of the SNA al-Sham Legion, reported to SMART that the NLF blocked an advance attempt by the Syrian government forces in Maarrat Alia, located between the Syrian government forces-controlled city of Saraqib and the SNA-controlled city of Sarmin.
Raad added that clashes between the two parties killed a Syrian government forces officer and injured ten members, without mentioning casualties among the NLF fighters.
Raad clarified that the Syrian government forces started the advance attempt with an artillery attack on the area, but after killing the officers and injuring the members, the Syrian government forces withdrew, continuing the artillery shelling to retrieve the injured members.
On March 5, 2020, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin reached a ceasefire agreement in Idlib. The agreement entered into force at 00:01 on March 6, 2020.
Earlier, the Syrian government forces and loyalist militias, supported by Russia, launched a ground military attack on the southern and eastern countryside of Idlib and the southern and western countryside of Aleppo. The Syrian government gained control of dozens of villages and towns in the region, after intensified shelling. The shelling killed and injured hundreds of civilians, and forced hundreds of thousands to displace.
