Aleppo - SMART

The medical office in the local council of the Al Bab city, 39 km east of Aleppo, Northern Syria, has decided to ban the circulation of foreign medicine. The council also prohibited the sale of imported medicine without obtaining the appropriate license.

On Tuesday, a member of the medical office, Abdullah al-Ragheb, told SMART that the decision was issued as a result of the circulation of medicine similar to the local medicine in terms of shape, name and tag, but they are forged and ranked third in terms of quality. He pointed out that the medical office have prevented pharmacies from trading counterfeit medicine, threatening with sanctions.

Al-Ragheb explained that the price of foreign medicine, Chinese, Turkish and Indian, is less than the high-cost local medicine because the pharmaceutical companies are located in areas under government control, and the drug distributors travel long distances. He pointed out that the prices of local medicine are double the prices of foreign medicine, so people resort to the foreign medicine of lower quality and effectiveness.

Al-Ragheb also pointed out that they temporarily banned the sale of all kind of foreign drugs until the completion of the composition and effectiveness of its pharmaceuticals.

Most of the Syrian governorates suffer from high prices and lack of various types of medicine due to the high transport expenses, the deterioration of the security situation and the fact that it’s become a profitable and lucrative trade. Also, some pharmaceutical factories have closed down as a result of shelling and battles.
