Turkey - SMART

On Sunday, the United States called on Turkey to "exercise restraint" and limit their military operations in the area of Afrin, 43 km north of Aleppo, Northern Syria, to maintain the safety of civilians.

Heather Nauert, the spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State said in a statement, “the United States continue to support the legitimate concerns of Ankara. At the same time, we urge Turkey to exercise restraint and ensure that its military operations remain limited in scope and duration and scrupulous to avoid civilian casualties,” according to Reuters.

The Free Syrian Army factions and Turkish soldiers launched a ground military attack, under the Olive Branch operation in Rajo, Northwestern Afrin, starting from their bases in Turkey. They announced that they gained control over villages and hills in the area, however the Syrian Democratic Forces have denied this.

The French Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, Jean-Yves Le Drian, called the United Nations Security Council to an urgent meeting to discuss the latest development in Eastern Ghouta, Idlib and Afrin.
