Turkey - SMART

On Wednesday, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel blamed Russia for the loyalist forces' military campaign in the cities and towns of Eastern Ghouta in Rif Dimashq governorate.

In a speech delivered before the German House of Representatives, Merkel said that Russia allows the loyalist campaign to continue, adding that Germany condemns the intensified loyalist airstrikes on Ghouta, according to Reuters.

A month ago, Russian-backed loyalist forces escalated the bombing on Eastern Ghouta, killing and injuring thousands of civilians. As a result of the campaign, loyalist forces have managed to seize more than two thirds of Ghouta. The bombing continues to intensify.

Merkel also condemned the Turkish military operation in the Afrin area, Northern Aleppo, Northern Syria. Merkel described Turkey’s acts “unacceptable.”

The Turkish Army and Free Syrian Army factions launched the Olive Branch military operation on Afrin two months ago, and have now gained control of Afrin city and most of its villages and towns. The area used to be controlled by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, which Turkey considers a terrorist organization.
