Turkey - SMART

On Saturday, the Syrian government forces targeted the city of Douma, 14 kilometers east of Damascus, with toxic gases twice, killing a civilian and injuring hundreds by suffocation.

Hamza Beriqdar, the Jaysh al-Islam spokesman, stated to SMART that the loyalist forces' helicopters dropped explosive barrels with toxic gases, killing and injuring more than 500 people as "an initial outcome".

The Civil Defense reported that the number of injured civilians after the attack reached more than 550, including 300 suffocation cases. The Civil Defense pointed out that they cannot determine the number of injured civilians due to continuous bombing on the city.

Mouaz Bouidani, the manager of the al-Sham humanitarian organization, confirmed that the bombing killed one civilian and caused more than 700 suffocation cases among civilians. He said that the death toll will likely increase, as medics are incapable of evacuating critical cases and injured civilians due to the intensified bombing.

Bouidani confirmed that the bombing targeted the perimeter of a field hospital in the city with a missile carrying an unidentified toxic gas.

The Civil Defense documented 15 suffocation cases after the loyalist forces targeted Douma with toxic gases, saying that the loyalist forces likely used chlorine gas.

A doctor in a hospital in the city who introduced himself as Abu Hashim added that the inujred civilians suffered from difficulty of breathing, sore eyes, and severe coughing. Dr Abu Hashim advised civilians to wash with themselves with water and avoid places with a strong smell.

This chemical attack is considered the second largest attack after the massacre of Khan Sheikoun in Idlib on Apr. 4, 2017. The loyalist forces bombed Khan Sheikoun with sarin gas, killing 85 civilians, including 27 children and 19 women, and injured more than 546 people by suffocation, most of them women, children, medics, and Civil Defense volunteers.

On Aug. 21, 2013, the loyalist forces targeted Eastern Ghouta with chemical and toxic gases, killing hundreds of civilians and suffocating others. A local coordination committee reported that the death toll reached 1,360 civilians, including dozens of women and children, and the unified medical office of Douma said that the shells carried sarin gas.
